5th Wheel Training Institute was founded in 1985 and offers training for truck drivers and the operation of heavy equipment. The institute currently runs two campuses, one in North-Bay Timmins and the other in London-Sarnia. The institute is recognized as a private career college under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005 and also has a PTDI certification from Washington, DC which is endorsed by the Ontario Trucking Association, the Canadian Trucking Alliance and the American Trucking Association.
The institute offers on-site training and has residencies available for its students. Training is provided for a number of heavy equipment including tractor-trailers, skid steers, dump trucks, forklifts, graders, bulldozers, backhoe-loaders and excavators. The institute also provides PTDI certified class AZ truck driver training.
5th Wheel Training Institute also provides a number of continuing education courses in subjects such as air brake adjustment and endorsement, chainsaw awareness, defensive driving, lockout and tagout, personal protective equipment and WHMIS. Additional courses are available for construction safety and vehicle operations. The institute also offers a Surface Miner program for drivers and operators that do extraction work in quarries or sand pits. This program teaches three modules in its Common Core course, which is now mandatory under the Mining Act. The institute also provides job placement assistance for its students under its Job Search Preparation Course. This provides students with industry and job board contacts as well as help in optimizing resumes and covering letters.
