The Counsellor Training Institute was founded in 1985 in Nova Scotia to provide students with the skills and practical training needed to become a qualified professional counselor. The institute is registered as a Private Career College and is also approved by the Nova Scotia Department of Education. Recent studies have shown that there is a growing need for trained, professional counselors in a number of areas, including community centers, schools and offices. The Counsellor Training Institute aims to equip students with the skills needed to find immediate employment on graduation.
The institute offers a number of financial assistance options to its students, including student loans, a bank line of credit or a grant. Students can take up courses under the Distance Learning Program or at the campuses which are located at downtown Halifax, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Vancouver and Victoria.
The Counsellor Training Institute offers a professional counseling certificate course which covers 21 weeks and includes ten required courses, five elective courses and a qualifying exam on completion. Students study subjects such as clinical counseling, human development theory, addiction counseling and group therapy. Students are required to take a Counseling Career Aptitude Assessment when applying for admission. The institute offers a client referral for its students, in order to help them secure employment on graduating. Many graduates have started rewarding careers as professional counselors in government agencies, religious and secular institutions, schools, corporations and in private practice.
