The Kutenai Art Therapy Institute is registered as a private postsecondary institution and is accredited by the PCTIA. It began to offer its diploma programs in 1995. It is located in the culturally rich city of Nelson, BC. Art therapy is used as a therapeutic treatment that can cure psychological problems and help heal emotional trauma and also helps increase self-esteem and reduces stress and anxiety.
The Kutenai Art Therapy Institute offers a post-baccalaureate, two-year diploma program in art therapy. The institution follows the educational and ethical guidelines of the Canadian Art Therapy Association and the British Columbia Art Therapy Association.
First-Year Core Courses include the courses Theoretical Foundations of Art Therapy: A Cultural & Historical Overview, Art Therapy and Phenomenological Hermeneutics, Theoretical Foundations of Art Therapy, Comparative Art Therapy, and Human Development and Art Therapy. First- and Second-Year Core Courses include Art Therapy Clinical Seminar, Therapeutic Skills in Art Therapy, and Art Therapy Training Group. Second-Year Core Courses include Psychopathology and Theories of Personality, Expressive Therapy, Qualitative Methods in Art Therapy Research, Group Dynamics and Art Therapy Studio Skills, Art Therapy Readings, Tutorials and Clinical Practice.
The Kutenai Art Therapy Institute offers both regular programs and distance education programs. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree, psychology credits, proficiency in English, background in creative arts and personal experience with therapy. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
