The Professional Institute of Massage Therapy opened in Calgary, Alberta in year 2004. Since then the institute has been determined to become one of the leading academies in massage therapy that creates a challenging environment for its students to learn in and become professional massage therapists. The college offers diploma courses as well as short courses. The diploma courses include the massage therapy diploma program. This program lasts for 7 months or 9 months and is a full time course, Monday to Friday. The course helps to provide the necessary skills that a therapist requires to work in a spa or therapeutic setting. There are certain pre-requisites to applying for a diploma program. The students have a have a high school diploma including Biology 30. It is an advantage to have done high school Physics or Kinesiology. The institute has a mature student policy and if a person does not meet these requirements, it can be discussed with the college. There is also a Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma Program which is a 6 month program. Students must have a high school diploma indicating that they have completed grade 12. Students studying massage therapy can take this diploma course in its abbreviated form. The short courses are generally for 32 hours and include massage theory, massage practical, massage and injury, hydrotherapy, anatomy, physiology, pathology and professional development. The student needs to be trained for at least 250 hours as per the law in Calgary to attain a license.
