Nail Technician

As the health and beauty industries have grown and diversified, the area of nail technology has grown into a field of its own, with a number of spas and salons hiring professionals who specialize in the area of nail technology. With men and women both taking an interest in caring for their hands and feet, the role of the nail technician is no longer relegated to simply applying nail polish. A professional nail technician today is someone who has training in identifying bacteria and fungi that may be present on the hands and feet, nail and skin anatomy as well as the best way to tend to different kinds of nails.

Nail technician courses usually begin by covering the importance of maintaining a professional image and professional conduct towards clients. They will also learn about different types of bacteria and fungi, how they move and reproduce as well as how nail infections can be treated and prevented from spreading. Contamination, sterilization and safety procedures are also taught. Students will learn about chemicals and adhesives used in nail technology, fingernail coating, the anatomy and physiology of the human body, nails and their disorders, skin and its disorders and how to consult with a client regarding various issues.

Students will also learn about water manicures, hot oil manicures, nail shapes, polish application, massaging and how to do men's manicures. They will also learn how to use an electric file and the application of nail tips. Students will also learn about acrylic nails, nail wraps, gels and the various aspects of nail art including air brush techniques, designs and the application of dried flowers. Courses will also teach career options available to graduates, including how to choose the right salon to begin your career in.
