Job Opportunities in Public Relations in Canada

By Maryse Cardin

Public relations offers numerous career opportunities in Canada and elsewhere. As public relations skills are highly transferable, there are no limits to the number of industries in which you can work or where you can apply your expertise. Different positions may suit you at different times in your career.

Practitioners can work in a public relations agency which vary in size from a few-person operation, to a medium-sized local agency of 10 to 20 employees, to a global conglomerate.

A number of companies have in-house publicists either working solo or within the communication or marketing departments. For instance, each Fairmont Hotel has its own in-house publicist, as does high tech giant Electronic Arts.

Professionals work in a variety of PR forms including public information, customer relations, corporate communications, public affairs, investor relations, or as part of government lobbying efforts. There are publicists working for non-profit organizations, charities and for art groups.

While some practitioners are generalists, others have expertise in a very specific field. One professional I know has an agency that caters exclusively to the horse breeding industry, while others specialize in entertainment, health care, law, fashion, or food. There are publicists promoting books and authors, while others work with children's products.

The secret to building a satisfying PR career is to work in an industry that is of interest to you and which does not go against your personal ethics. You need to believe in the product or service that you are publicizing to be effective and achieve outstanding results.
