Studying Public Relations in Canada

There are numerous colleges and universities that offer studies in public relations. The courses offer a good opportunity to learn many of the skills needed to do well in the field such as the ability to write media releases, to organize media conferences, manage special events and deal with issues and crisis situations.
Traditionally many practitioners like myself came to the field having studied journalism or worked in the media. Others have English or Communication degrees from universities.
I predict that this will change as more public relations studies are offered and those interested in pursuing a career in PR graduate from these programs.
Senior practitioners also tone their skills by enlisting in some of the continuing professional development courses offered by the numerous public relations associations or by colleges. Several of my students at Langara College are in fact already working in the in-house communication or marketing departments of large corporations such as Telus or BC Hydro.
