Building Construction Technician - Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology

Algonquin College's Building Construction Technician diploma, offered at the Woodroffe Campus, is a 48-week program designed to expose students to the rudimentary abilities, knowledge, and skills that will enable them to succeed in finding a wide array of 'employment in the construction industry in both the hands-on skills sector and the knowledge and management areas.' The Program will be delivered in three levels. The first level focuses on 'the basics of drafting, building layout, construction safety, and building structures,' and will include substantial practical learning supplemented with construction industry-related 'training in manual drafting, AutoCAD, communications, and mathematics.' The second of level of the Program will centre around AutoCAD II, geometric designs and constructions for floors, roofs, and arches, materials estimating, plan reading, 'production of scaled models of wood-framed structures; and the selection and application of exterior residential finishes.' The Program's final level will emphasize 'the application of the principles of building science and mechanics,' the construction of decks and porches, insulated concrete foundations, and structural steel framing, interior finishing systems, and the history of construction.

Graduates will be primed for employment in a wide range of entry level positions in the construction industry including assistant project manager, concrete form worker, construction framer, deck and porch design/builder, door and window installer, exterior systems applicator, interior systems installer, and junior estimator. Upon attaining entry-level experience, graduates may apply for more advanced employment including commercial construction contractors, custom homebuilders, design/build renovators, estimators, safety supervisors, site managers, and sub-trades co-ordinators.

Individuals who aspire to advance their careers in Building Construction, or an aspect thereof, such as carpentry or cabinetmaking, may be interested in pursuing further educational opportunities to refine and enhance their abilities, particularly via an apprenticeship. The latter is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work, in an indentured capacity, under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning, for a specified period of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade. Graduates of the Building Construction Technician diploma are 'eligible to apply for advanced standing for the in-school portion of their' apprenticeship training.'

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Persons with journeyperson status may, after accruing several years of experience, become supervisors, trainers, and/or educators of their respective trades.

Admission to the Building Construction Technician program is a two-stage process. Firstly, applicants must be admitted to the College. Applicants under 19 years of age must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Individuals with an OSSD or equivalent who completed Basic Level senior English and/or Mathematics courses, Open courses, or Workplace courses 'will be tested to determine their eligibility for admission.' Applicants who do not possess a high school diploma but who are 19 years of age or older may apply as a Mature Student. The latter's 'eligibility may be determined by academic achievement testing for which a fee of $40.00 will be charged.' Secondly, to qualify for the Program, applicants must have taken Grade 12 Mathematics (MAP4C or equivalent) and Grade 12 English (ENG4C or equivalent). An applicant's abilities in English and/or Mathematics will be a factor in determining acceptance into the Program in instances where 'the number of qualified applicants exceed the number of available places.'
