Residential Construction Framing Technician - Canadian Community College

Carpentry Education in Canada

Carpentry and Woodworking Programs -- Community College Programs

PROGRAM WEBSITE
Residential Construction Framing Technician - Canadian Community College

Residential Construction Framing Technicians are typically responsible for the construction of wooden and/or steel frames and support structures, such as floors, stairs, and joints, among others, of buildings as well as the installation of doors and windows and the enclosing of the building. Technicians are involved in the construction of a building from the creation of its foundations to the installation of the last finish.

Canadian Community College's 49-week Residential Construction Framing Technician Diploma is a competency-based program comprised 'of formal in-school training and on-the-job work experience' primarily designed for individuals 'who wish to gain entry-level skills to work in a variety of small to medium sized construction and renovation companies.' The Program's curriculum will cover topics 'ranging from the basics of hand tools, power tools, and layouts to the competencies required for formwork, floor and wall framing and framing of roofs for residential buildings.' Furthermore, the Program will include 'experiential lectures and workshops facilitated by specialized industry experts and work experience at various construction sites throughout the lower mainland.' Candidate's on-the-job performance will be tracked through the use of a logbook. To graduate, students must successfully demonstrate the 'framing, forming and exterior finishing skills, covered through the completion of 23 courses (including 3 off-site training opportunities).'

The Program has been endorsed 'by the Industry Training Authority of BC, who regulates all apprenticeship training programs in the province. As well as being registered apprentices, students who successfully meet attendance and work requirements will receive an industry recognized trade qualification (T.Q.) at the end of their studies.'

Employment-wise, graduates of the Program 'can expect to find employment in the residential construction industry, homebuilders, Union and non-Union sites and small construction and renovation companies that specialize in formwork, framing, and exterior renovations.' Common employers include construction companies, furniture and cabinet manufacturers, general contractors, and residential and ICI sectors. Some graduates may prefer to become self-employed and/or establish their own companies.

Graduates may also pursue further training in construction or a particular trade thereof such as carpentry or cabinetmaking. Graduates may be able to obtain advanced credits towards an apprenticeship, subject to approval of the Industry Training Authority. An apprenticeship is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work, in an indentured capacity, under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade, typically via the completion of an apprenticeship.

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Moreover, persons with journeyperson status may, after accruing several years of experience, become supervisors, trainers, and/or educators of their respective trades.
