Basic Construction Trades Training Certificate - Canadian Community College

Canadian Community College's 8-week Basic Construction Trades Training (BCTT) Certificate program provides students with the 'formal in-shop training competencies combined with life management instruction, safety certifications and practical hands-on experience to' prepare participants 'for employment in the construction trades.' Participants will learn 'to identify and use life management skills that are required to be successful in gaining and maintaining employment in the construction trades:' In particular, 'students will receive hands-on training in basic construction skills and exposure to the carpentry trade.' The latter involves primarily the assembly, construction, installation, maintenance, repair, restoration, and/or renovation of architectures, components, forms, and/or structures created primarily from wood or wood-substitutes. Professions related to Carpentry include Cabinetmaking (Joinery), Millwork, Planermill, Refinishing, Wood Products and Manufacturing, and Woodworking. Furthermore, graduates of the BCTT program will earn Certification in Fall Protection, First Aid level 1, Ladder Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

Graduates will be prepared to pursue a variety of employment opportunities in construction, especially working on construction/industrial, maintenance, and/or residential jobs. Construction/industrial work may include building 'concrete forms, bridges, shelters, towers and other structures.' On maintenance jobs, graduates will mostly be charged with repairing and remodeling 'existing structures of all kinds.' Residential work can include such duties as basement cribbing, door installations, frame construction, interior/exterior finishes, and/or roofing. Common employers include construction companies, furniture and cabinet manufacturers, general contractors, and residential and ICI sectors. Some graduates may prefer to become self-employed and/or establish their own companies.

Individuals who aspire to advance their careers in construction, or an aspect thereof, such as carpentry, may be interested in pursuing further educational opportunities to refine and enhance their abilities, particularly via an apprenticeship. The latter is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work, in an indentured capacity, under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning, for a specific period of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade, typically via the completion of an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship will normally take up to 4 years to complete. Graduates of the BCTT may qualify for advanced credits towards an apprenticeship thereby reducing the amount of time necessary to complete the latter.

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Moreover, persons with journeyperson status may, after accruing several years of experience, become supervisors, trainers, and/or educators of their respective trades.

Prospective international students should note that the College offers unique 1-year BCTT diploma programs for international learners. International applicants are advised to contact the College's Admission Office for further information.
