Residential Construction Framing Technician Certificate Program - College of New Caledonia

Residential Construction Framing Technicians are typically responsible for the construction of wooden and/or steel frames and support structures, such as floors, stairs, and joints, among others, of buildings as well as the installation of doors and windows and the enclosing of the building. Technicians are involved in the construction of a building from the creation of its foundations to the installation of the last finish.

The College of New Caledonia's Residential Construction Framing Technician Certificate is designed to train 'framing professionals in BCÆs residential construction industry,' and combines 23 weeks of hands-on, practical, in-school education with 6 months of work experience. Among the major topics which will be covered during the in-class portion of the Program, which will be delivered at the College's Quesnel campus, include basic forming, blueprint reading, building science, equipment, materials, and tools of the trade, framing, surveying and layout, renovating, and work safety. The Industry Training Authority (ITA) of British Columbia will award graduates of the Program the Residential Construction Framing Technician Certificate. The Program is developed between a cooperation of home builders and the College and is recognized by industry including the Canadian Homebuilders Association of BC Residential Construction

Career-wise, graduates typically pursue employment in various aspects of construction, particularly residential, and the outlook for job openings is positive as 'it is estimated that by 2011' there will be upwards of '62,000 new job openings in construction in BC (CHBA-BC).' Graduates of the Program have indeed been successful as upwards of 80 percent are traditionally employed after 6 weeks of graduation. Moreover, graduates may pursue further training in various construction or related jobs like carpentry, cabinetmaking (joinery), millwork, planermill, refinishing, wood products and manufacturing, and woodworking. In fact, students of the Program who complete the in-school component are eligible to receive 'credit for the first year theory' of a carpentry apprenticeship program and those who receive the Certificate are automatically granted credit for Level 1 of a carpentry apprenticeship by ITA.

An apprenticeship is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning for a specified amount of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade, typically via the completion of an apprenticeship.

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Moreover, persons who obtain journeyperson status may, after accruing several years of work experience, become supervisors, trainers, and/or educators of their respective trades.

To be eligible for the Residential Construction Framing Technician Certificate applicants must have completed Grade 10, or equivalent, must 'write the English and Math Achievement Test (EMAT) for the purpose of providing additional assistance that may contribute to student success,' must provide a resume and a handwritten letter stating why they want to assume the Program, and must 'attend a program interview and be successfully selected.' In cases where more successful applicants apply, selection 'will be considered on a first-come first-qualified' basis.
