Women In Skilled Trades Program Pre-Apprenticeship Carpentry - Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology

The Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology's Women in Skilled Trades Program, Pre-Apprenticeship Carpentry is a 40-week certificate program held at the Waterloo Campus which provides students with the first year of the class-based 'requirements for the General Carpenter trade.' Among the major topics to be covered by the Program are building codes, building science, computer literacy (including Computer-Aided Design or CAD), electrical wiring, employment strategies and workplace relations, estimating and layout, framing, HVAC systems, interior and exterior finishes, health and safety, metal cutting and welding, plumbing systems, reading and interpreting blueprints, renovations of existing buildings, rigging, structures, and use and care of manual and power tools. The Program will also include a 400-hour work placement course.

The College will award program graduates a 'record of achievement' and 'a separate letter to confirm that they have met all the first year in-school requirements for the General Carpenter trade.' Graduates may pursue employment in various aspects of the carpentry trade or related work that usually involves working on commercial/industrial, maintenance, or residential projects primarily in the construction industry. Common employers include construction companies, furniture and cabinet manufacturers, general contractors, and residential and ICI sectors. Some graduates may pursue self employment. The precise work a carpenter performs on any given project is determined by the specific requirements of that project. Some carpenters, though, specialize in one or a limited number of tasks demanded of their craft. For example, some carpenters may focus on basement cribbing, exterior and/or interior finishing, flooring, form and/or frame construction, or stair construction, among others.

Moreover, graduates often go on to complete a carpentry apprenticeship. The latter is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work, in an indentured capacity, under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade.

An apprenticeship will take about 4 years to complete. However, with the the completion of the Pre-apprentice Carpentry program, completing an apprenticeship will take about 3 years. The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Carpenters who earn journeyperson status may, after obtaining several years of experience beyond an apprenticeship, become educators, supervisors, and/or trainers of their trade.

To be eligible for the Women in Skilled Trades Program, applicants must have successfully completed General or Advanced level Grade 10 English and Mathematics, or equivalent. However, the College prefers potential students to have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), 'with most courses at the General or Advanced level, or be 19 year of age or over. Applicants will be 'tested for proficiency in English, Mathematics, and mechanical aptitude.'
