Construction Engineering Technician - Supervisor - Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology

The Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology's 2-year Construction Engineering Technician - Supervisor, Ontario College Diploma Program is primarily designed for students interested in 'a career in the residential construction industry.' The Program will focus on providing learners with the manual skills and technical knowledge required to succeed in the field like the construction, estimating, and scheduling abilities 'associated with the building of bungalows, 2-storey houses, duplexes and townhouses.'

Career-wise, the Program's graduates will pursue various employment in the residential construction industry including as building inspectors, carpenters, cost estimators, developers, field supervisors, or technical representatives for residential building companies, construction material suppliers, or municipal building departments.

Individuals who aspire to advance their careers in carpentry may be interested in pursuing further educational opportunities to refine and and enhance their skills, particularly via an apprenticeship. The latter is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning for a specified amount of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade, typically via the completion of an apprenticeship. Graduates of the Construction Engineering Technician - Supervisor may qualify for advanced credits towards an apprenticeship.

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Carpenters who earn journeyperson status may, after obtaining several years of experience beyond an apprenticeship, become educators, supervisors, and/or trainers of their trade.

Moreover, 'students wishing to enter the Construction Engineering Technician - Supervisor program will be registered in Year 1 in the Construction Carpentry Techniques program,' and can complete the latter program along with the former by taking the proper courses. Graduates possessing 'a cumulative average of 'A' (3.5 GPA) may be considered for advanced standing credit for up to 9 courses or with a cumulative average of 'B' (2.7 GPA) may be considered for advanced standing credit for up to 6 courses to the Bachelor of Engineering Science degree program at the University of Western Ontario.'

To be eligible for the Construction Engineering Technician - Supervisor program, applicants must either possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), including College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) stream courses, Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) with Apprenticeship or Technical Mathematics, Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED), Pre-Technology Ontario College Certificate, or Mature Student Status (MSS). OSSD, GED, and MSS applicants must also have successfully completed any Grade 12 Mathematics (C) or (U) course, and it is recommended that ACE students take an ACE program course in Apprenticeship or Technical Mathematics. Students who successfully complete one of the College's Pre-Technology and Academic and Career Entrance Technology stream programs, 'and fulfill any other specified conditions,' will be guaranteed admission to the Program the following year. Furthermore, 'applicants who lack required courses may be admitted to the program subject to appropriate prior upgrading.' The College also advises prospective students to attain work experience relevant to the Program such as 'summer employment in construction or related activity.' The College will grant students advanced standing in any of the Program's courses provided they are able to 'demonstrate that they have the required skills to meet the objectives of the course.'

Applicants who successfully completed the College's Construction Carpentry Techniques program are eligible to progress to 'the second year of the Construction Engineering Technician - Supervisor program.' However, such applicants must first 'complete an Application for Program Transfer form available from the Office of the Registrar, Room, E101.'
