Sustainable Building Design and Construction - Sir Sandford Fleming College

Sir Sandford Fleming College 20-week Sustainable Building Design and Construction certificate is a unique, cutting-edge program that will equip students with 'an integrated skill set in the design of structures using green, natural or sustainable building methods, technologies and materials and renewable energy resources.' The Program has been primarily for individuals 'in the construction industry seeking a specialized skill set; graduates of schools of architecture, interior design, or engineering who wish to have hands-on experience in addition to a theoretical base; those with an environmental background seeking hands-on skills in construction, and people with a general interest who might be considering home building.' Students will have the opportunity to apply, practice, and enhance what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations via the hands-on 'construction of a sustainable building.' Prospective students should note that the Program is delivered in an intensive, compressed format whose ' course workload is equivalent to a three-semester (45 week) program.'

Graduates of the Program will have specialized knowledge and skills to pursue a wide range of positions, particularly in the construction and related industries. Potential employers include 'sustainable building companies in Ontario and across Canada and the United States,' many of whom are seeking 'new employees with a sound grounding in sustainable building to assist them in meeting the current demand for their services,' various traditional construction firms that 'are exploring a variety of green building options to align their practices with market demands,' and 'government housing agencies, non-profit housing organizations, international development agencies, or in public awareness and education.' Furthermore, graduates may find employment with indoor air quality specialists, ecological renovations firms, professional designers, renewable energy companies, the sustainable building movement, various cooling, heating, and ventilation businesses, and water and waste treatment companies many of which 'are in need of employees with an understanding of their respective field and its position in the sustainable building field.' Some graduates may prefer to pursue self-employment initiatives such as careers 'as builders and designers of sustainable homes, as specialists in a particular field, or as innovators in product or service development related to sustainable building.'

To qualify for admission to the Program, applicants will normally need to possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), 'with the majority of credits at the College (C) and Open (O) level, including two English credits in the College (C) stream or a current Certificate of Qualification as a Carpenter - General.' Prospective students that 'will be 19 years of age before the commencement of classes' and 'demonstrate potential for success in college studies,' may still apply and 'will be considered on an individual basis.' Mature applicants, however, must 'write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test.'
