Penology and Youth Certificate - Durham College

Durham College's 1-year Ontario College Certificate in 911 and Emergency Response is a unique, career-oriented program designed for individuals interested in careers in 'emergency response, dispatch and communications.' Students will learn about applied ambulance, police, 911, and basic dispatch, Canadian law and provincial legislation, customer service ethics, crisis intervention, dynamics of conflict, emergency management, and stress, wellness, and nutrition. Participants will also develop their respective interpersonal, keyboarding, and research skills. Furthermore, students will 'learn about the practical aspects of emergency response and' will be' assigned to work eight hours per week in a range of workplace settings. As such, students observe professionals, as well as use the skills and knowledge gained through their program.'

The Program's curriculum 'has been designed in consultation with, and is supported by, the full cross-section of potential employers' thus ensuring that graduates have the skills, knowledge, and abilities that are in relevant and demand for this type of work. Ambulance, fire, and/or police services, alarm and security companies, and technical support centres, ĉand numerous others who dispatch emergency response teams and/or provide direction/information via telephone and/or radioĈ typically employ graduates of the Program.

Moreover, the type of work in which graduates are typically employed 'attracts people of all ages, is non-gender specific and can accommodate people with disabilities,' and needs assessments have determined 'that there is a strong need for qualified, trained individuals to enter this profession.' Due to the nature of the work, however, many employers may be reluctant to hire individuals with a criminal record.

To be eligible for admission to the Program applicants must have either an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, Basic Training for Skills Development (BTSD), or General Educational Development (GED). Applicants must also have completed senior level (Grade 11 or higher) subject credits, including General (G), Advanced (A), OAC, College Preparation (C), University/College Preparation (M), University Preparation (U) or Postsecondary (college or university), Grade 12 English, and 'three additional senior level credits.'

Applicants who do not have the aforementioned credentials and who are 19 years of age or older by the commencement of the Program may apply under "mature student status." Furthermore, applicants 'with post-secondary credits may be considered for advanced standing on an individual basis.' After admission to the Program, students must submit proof of a 'criminal records search and' be able to pass a 'security clearance' Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid 'must be completed in order to be eligible for field placement.'
