PROGRAM WEBSITE
Justice Issues in Aboriginal Communities - Justice Institute of British Columbia

The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), in partnership with the Aboriginal Programs and Services and the Corrections and Community Justice Division, offers a unique Justice Issues in Aboriginal Communities program. The latter is primarily designed for 'groups and organizations who work with Aboriginal clients and communities, or for persons who are of Aboriginal heritage' or for people that 'are interested in working with Aboriginal persons in a criminal justice setting.' The Program will provide 'an overview of Aboriginal justice issues,' including an exploration and examination of 'the impact of historical assimilation and oppression' and of 'contemporary issues facing Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system.' The experiences and perceptions of participants 'in these areas will be explored through discussion groups in the course.' Moreover, students will be encouraged to present 'critical analysis of how Aboriginal people have been let down by the current justice system and to dialogue about what changes are needed to promote more effective working relationships with Aboriginal communities.'

The primary goal of the Program is to enable students to 'reassess current attitudes, assumptions and beliefs about Aboriginal people and leadership in Aboriginal communities; identify common terminology often used to refer to Aboriginal people; examine the cultural diversity of Aboriginal people in' one's province; 'describe and discuss how historical injustice has negatively impacted Aboriginal people; explore examples of Aboriginal justice in contrast to the Canadian justice system;' and describe how what learners 'have learned or discovered' through the Program 'will impact or change the relationships' they 'form with Aboriginal persons.' Upon successful completion of the Program, participants receive a Certificate of Achievement. There are no required prerequisites for admission to the Program.

The Program is 21 hours in duration and may completed through a part-time, online basis 'over a designated number of weeks' or it can be taken 'on a 3-day face-to-face basis.' Furthermore, the Program may also be arranged to be taken by a group or organization.
