Family Mediation Certificate - Justice Institute of British Columbia

The Justice Institute: the Corrections and Community Justice Division (CCJD) and the Centre for Conflict Resolution jointly offer the Family Mediation Certificate program primarily designed for individuals interested in specializing 'in mediation within a family context.' The Program is 280 hours, or 40 days, in duration consisting of a combination of CCJD courses and Centre for Conflict Resolution courses and a final assessment. The Assessment 'consists of written preparation for a mediation, a one-hour mediation role-play, a self-evaluation and an oral examination.' CCJD courses will normally be 'delivered online or by correspondence, while the Centre for Conflict Resolution courses are delivered in classrooms at the Justice InstituteÆs main campus in New Westminster; although some of the latter's courses offered at the Centre's downtown YWCA location, Victoria campus, and through various 'community partnerships with colleges throughout BC.'

Among the major topics to be covered by the Program include child support guidelines, dealing with interpersonal conflict, developing your cultural fluency, effects of separation and divorce on adults and children, family justice services in BC and Alberta, family violence, mediated agreements and related court orders, mediation and negotiation skills, multicultural issues in family justice, and resolving conflict in the workplace. Students will also have elective opportunities in such issues as dealing with defensiveness in conflict, defining issues and setting the agenda, dynamics of power, getting to the heart of the conflict, identifying control and abuse in pre-mediation, separate meetings, shifting from positions to interests, substance abuse issues in family justice, and theoretical foundations of dispute resolution. As an elective, participants may take the 2-day Family Mediation Certificate Preparation Workshop, which prepares students for the Assessment. Students may also use the videotape from the Workshop for their assessment.

Interested persons may 'register directly for any courses in the Family Mediation Certificate through the' Justice Institute of British Columbia's Registration Office. Graduates of the Program will typically pursue employment as private family mediators; students who took the Introduction to Family Justice Services in BC courses as part of the Program may be eligible for employment as a Family Justice Counselors. Prospective applicants should be aware, however, that having the credentials for employment does not guarantee employment. Furthermore, because of the nature of the work, individuals with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in this area.
