Adult Correctional Officer - Justice Institute of British Columbia

The Justice Institute of British Columbia, via the Corrections and Community Justice Division, provides preparatory courses for individuals aspiring to a career as a Correctional Officer or in related fields of criminal justice. These courses may be of particular interest to persons currently employed or volunteering in adult and/or youth correctional institutions or settings, including those outside of British Columbia, community, human, and/or social services, justice, law enforcement, and security.

The Institute offers 5 such courses including Introduction to the Criminal Justice System (Adult Custody), Managing People in Conflict with the Law, Multicultural and Diversity Training, Professional Ethics and Standards of Conduct (Corrections), and Role and Duties of the Adult Correctional Officer. Most of the courses are 7 hours in duration, worth 0.5 credits, and have no specific admission requirements. Completion of any or all courses 'does not guarantee employment;' however, they will allow students to attain the knowledge and skills that will make them more employable in the field.

An individual employed as 'new Officers of the BC Corrections Branch' will be classified as a "Security Officer." He/she will only be 'eligible for Correctional Officer status' once he/she has fulfilled 18 months of full time employment, or equivalent and completed 'all training and performance reviews.' Regardless of whether or not an individual as completed one or more of the aforementioned courses, anyone interested in pursuing a career in this field is invited to 'apply directly to one or more of the Correctional Centres within the BC Corrections Branch.' An individual must, however, complete an application package for each Centre to which he/she applies. Auxiliary Security Officers are continually being recruited. There are 8 primary Correctional Centres including the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women (ACCW), Fraser Regional Correctional Centre (FRCC), Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre (KRCC), Nanaimo Correctional Centre (NCC), North Fraser Pretrial Centre (NFPC), Prince George Regional Correctional Centre (PGRCC), Surrey Pretrial (SP), and Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre (VIRCC). For further information regarding employment, prospective applicants should contact the Centre(s) in which they are interested.

To apply for a position, an individual must be 19 years of age or older and include a birth certificate or proof of citizenship, completed British Columbia Employment Application, CPIC (including fingerprints), Current Criminal Records Review Act check, current photograph (passport quality and size), and Drivers License Abstract for the last 5 years. Applicants must also provide evidence that they have a recognized high school diploma or GED, ability in Emergency First Aid Level 1 (Industry) or higher, a valid BC Drivers License Class 5, Language Proficiency Index (LPI) - Level 4, and medical clearance to take the Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT). Moreover, 'applicants will be screened for suitability' through such things as 'a background reference check,' Computer Voice Stress Analysis, and interviews and perhaps a CORNET search, like an applicant's correctional history.
