Correctional Worker - Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology

Combining theoretical and practical education, Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology's 2-year Correctional Worker program exposes students to the knowledge and skills required to work in various 'areas of correction, from institutional settings for adults and young offenders to community-based settings such as group homes, community resource centres and private agencies.' The Program's first year shares it's curriculum with the College's Law and Security Administration - Professional Security and programs and is primarily geared towards introducing students 'to the criminal justice system, and the behavioural sciences.' The final year will emphasize 'the practical skills and knowledge required to function effectively as a Correctional Worker.'

The second year include a 3-week work experience placement during the 4th semester allowing students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations 'while working in a variety of correctional settings.' Students must complete 'all courses in Terms 1 and 2; and maintain 'a 2.0 grade point average' to be eligible for the work placement. Furthermore, 'all core courses (CJP, PFP, LSA) in the program must be completed with a grade of "C-" or better in order for the student to graduate from the program.' The Program may also include field trips, for which students' will be required to pay all associated costs, 'to study a variety of areas that deal with the program.'

Graduates of the Program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of criminal justice or related fields. Career-wise, graduates may be employed in such places as 'federal and provincial correctional systems.' Graduates employed at the federal level are usually 'initially employed by the Correctional Service of Canada as front-line correctional officers in adult institutions. Advancement to positions such as Case Management Officers, Living Unit Officers, Classification Officers and Parole Officers is possible through education, training, and internal job competitions.'

At the provincial level, in Ontario for example, graduates are typically 'employed by the Ministry of the Solicitor General and Correctional Services as correctional officers in institutions for adults and young offenders and in open custody facilities.' Moreover, correctional workers are increasingly need 'in community-based programs such as group homes, community resource centres and private and volunteer agencies.' Students should be aware that 'a criminal record may limit employment opportunities following completion of this program. Potential applicants should discuss this situation with the program co-ordinator prior to applying to the program.' Graduates may also further their respective training and education at various colleges, universities, and institutions often with advanced credit.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must either possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with any Grade 12 English (C), (U/C), (U) or (O), Basic Training and Skills Development (BTSD) - Level IV Certificate, or Human Services Foundation Certificate. Applicants who are '19 years of age or older and' do not meet the necessary academic requirements for admission may still apply via "mature student status.' The latter category of applicant may 'be required to attend an assessment session.' Applicants that do not meet the regular academic requirements for admission are advised to call a Lambton College counselor.

All applicants should be aware that they may be required to submit proof that they hold valid First Aid/CPR certification and/or a clean police record; some employers, for example, some employers require students to have a clean police record to qualify for employment. Furthermore, some employers may demand that students have 'a high level of overall physical fitness.'
