Court and Tribunal Agent/Paralegal Diploma - Durham College

Combining theoretical and practical education, Durham College's 1-year Court and Tribunal Agent / Paralegal Certificate is primarily designed for practicing law clerk professionals, legal assistants, and paralegals aspiring to acquire or upgrade 'the specialized knowledge and skills required,' particularly in the area of administrative law, 'to work as court and tribunal agents and/or as paralegals.' The Program is designed to allow graduates to meet the new rigorous academic and professional standards that are expected to become law and govern the paralegal profession in Ontario, including being able to successfully write all mandatory licensing examinations. Among the major topics the Program will cover are Accounting and Computer Applications for Court and Tribunal Agents/Paralegals, Administrative Tribunal and Legal Research, Evidence and Advocacy, Human Rights, Immigration and Refugee Law, Labour and Employment Law, Medication and Arbitration, Professional Conduct and Authorized Practices, Provincial Offence and Summary Conviction Procedures, and Small Claims Court Practice and Collection Procedures. During the second semester, students will be able to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via a work experience placement. The latter provides 'the student with practical experience in a legal environment and' assists him/her 'in utilizing and integrating the skills and knowledge acquired in the program.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue employment, career advancement, or further education in various aspects of the legal field or related areas. Career-wise, graduates will be prepared for positions in places like administrative tribunals, government agencies, law firms, and legal departments of corporations, among others. Graduates can also further their education at various institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada often with advanced standing.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must either have a 'related two-year college diploma or university degree or three to five years of related experience (must submit a resumT and references) and Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.' Advanced standing is possible for students who possess relevant post-secondary credits; qualification for advanced credits will be made 'on an individual basis.'
