Criminal Justice Certificate - Maskwachees Cultural College

Maskwachees Cultural College's 1-year Criminal Justice Certificate, which is currently 'being revised to become a two year diploma program,' is primarily designed for First Nations individuals interested in entry level employment and/or further educational opportunities in the criminal justice field, especially justice and corrections. The Program has been primarily created as a means for First Nations communities to 'take more control over the criminal justice systems in their communities' by training and developing First Nations individuals to become agents in those systems, rather than depend on outside law enforcement agents and agencies. As such, the Program aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to work and/or pursue further education and/or training in various aspects of the criminal justice system. This includes exposing students to 'a basic knowledge and understanding of the Canadian perspective of criminal justice,' 'Cree perspectives on healing services which may provide appropriate alternatives to the Canadian justice system' and ways 'for people to develop further the Cree Identity within the Cree Way,' the abilities 'to assist the community as it develops towards increasing jurisdiction in law enforcement and corrections,' and 'the communication skills needed by people involved in justice and corrections services.' To graduate from the Program, students must successfully complete all courses with a 60 percent minimum average. To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must have completed at least 'English 10 or equivalent based on assessments.'

Graduates may pursue various entry-level positions and/or educational opportunities in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related fields. Career-wise, graduates may apply for various positions in areas like court liaison work, corrections, law enforcement, and security. Graduates may also find 'employment with departments or agencies providing services to persons who become involved with the criminal justice system across Canada, including working for educational or governmental institutions or for employers in the non-profit or private sector.' Students should be aware that while they can still receive training, having 'a criminal record may be an obstacle to employment in the field of Criminal Justice.' Furthermore, more advanced positions in criminal justice will necessitate further training and education, and graduates can pursue further educational opportunities at various institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada.
