Criminal Justice Diploma - University College of the Fraser Valley

Combining theoretical and practical education, the University College of the Fraser Valley's (UCFV's) 2-year Criminal Justice Diploma is designed for students aspiring to attain 'front-line/entry-level jobs,' career advancement, skill upgrading, or further education and/or training in Criminal Justice or related fields. The Program provides students with a broad, primarily liberal arts-based education in criminal justice including courses Criminology, Physical Fitness Training, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology with elective courses offered in Business. Communications, and English. Among the major topics the Program will cover are Academic and Professional Development, Canadian Politics, Comparative Criminal Justice Systems, Criminal Justice, Criminal Law, Problem Management Skills for Criminal Justice Interventions, Psychological and Sociological Explanations of Criminal and Deviant Behaviour, and Research Methods in Criminology. Students will also be able to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world settings via a supervised work experience placement. The Placement will allow the learner to practice 'skills gained in prerequisite courses and' get feedback from the both employer and instructor regarding his/her competencies.

The Program also has a special British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) 'Forensic Investigation transfer option that 'is designed primarily for students who wish to transfer directly into the third year of the Bachelor of Technology in Forensic Investigation at BCIT, following completion of their UCFV diploma.' Students who take 'this option must choose one of three paths (i.e., Economic Crime Studies, Forensic Science Studies, or Computer Crime Studies), each of which provides the prerequisites for a path of study at the upper-level with the BCIT Bachelor of Technology in Forensic Investigation transfer option.' Another option students may consider is entering 'directly into the third year of the UCFV BA (Criminal Justice) program. Students considering this option are reminded that they can also enter directly into the third year of the Bachelor Technology in Forensic Investigation with either an Associate of Science degree or Computing Information Systems diploma from UCFV.' Students who intend to take advantage of one of these options or who intend to transfer to another post-secondary institutions upon graduation are advised to contact an advisor at UCFV or at the institution to which the student wants to transfer for further information regarding this issue.

Graduates of the Criminal Justice Diploma program may pursue entry level positions, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related fields. Career-wise, graduates may be employed in various positions across Canada, including working for educational or governmental institutions or for employers in the non-profit or private sector. For example, graduates may work in the areas of administration, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, government, insurance, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, private and public investigation, the courts, victim services, and young offenders, to name but a few. Some careers, however, may require further training. Students should be aware that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the Criminal Justice field.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, 'all applicants must have a B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent.' Additionally, prospective students must 'have English 12 (A) or a CPT score of 48 or better or UCFV English 081 & 091 (C+ or better) or UCFV ENGL 099 (C or better) or an LPI essay score of 30/40 (level five). Acceptance will be conditional upon proof of having met this entrance requirement. Applicants are encouraged to submit proof as soon as it is available.'

Applicants must also 'be willing to undergo an initial security clearance check and further checks as may be required in individual courses,' submit 'a statement from a physician as evidence of good health (to be obtained after applicantĘs interview with faculty), and provide the complete names, addresses, and telephone numbers of three people (non-relatives) who will be willing to provide a comprehensive personal reference.'

Applicants must also submit 'a neat and well written 300- to 500- word statement articulating your personal strengths and weaknesses and interest in criminal justice' and 'attend an orientation session in April during which criminal justice faculty present an overview of the options available and career opportunities in criminal justice.' The UCFV will contact students about 'the orientation and interview process.'
