Criminology Certificate - Assiniboine Community College

Assiniboine Community College's Certificates of Achievement in Criminology provides an introduction 'to some of the various topics in the criminology field,' and is primarily designed for individuals 'presently in occupations where some of this additional knowledge would be useful or for people seeking careers in the Criminal Justice System who wish to obtain a basic level of knowledge about this field.' Among the major topics to be covered are Aboriginal Cultures, Addictions and Violence, Communication - Criminal Justice, Communication Processes, Justice Recruitment and Process, Orientation to Justice, Professional Ethics, Theories of Crime Causation, Treatment and Intervention, and Young Offenders and Youth Justice.

To graduate from the Program, students must complete 'a minimum of 240 hours of credit - 2 required courses (40 hrs each) plus 160 hrs of optional courses. Students must attain a minimum grade of C in all courses.' Once the '240 hours of instruction' are completed, the student 'may apply for' his/her 'Certificate of Achievement by writing a letter to the Community Learning Office including a list of courses' he/she has taken.

Graduates of the Program will be prepared to pursue employment, career advancements, and/or further studies in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related areas. Career-wise, graduates may apply for various positions across Canada in such areas as border or community services, corrections, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, insurance, investigations, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, public administration, Revenue Canada, social work, the courts, and victim services, to name but a few. Some careers and/or employers may require further training beyond that provided by the Certificate, however. Furthermore, individuals with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in the criminal justice field as many employers will be reluctant to hire those with a criminal history. Graduates may also pursue further educational opportunities in the field.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants typically need to have completed 'Grade 12 (Senior 4) or' General Educational Development (GED) 'equivalency or special admissions.' Prospective students must also have the 'appropriate reading and writing skills' needed 'to be successful in this program' as 'some courses require the students to write and research assignments, term papers and projects.'
