Diploma in Criminology - Douglas College

Douglas College's Criminal Justice Certificate, which may be completed in1 year of full-time studies, is primarily geared towards students 'who want to take a series of courses in the field of criminal justice in order to increase their knowledge of the structures and processes in the Canadian justice system.' The Program also provides learners 'an opportunity to consider vocational goals or to prepare for the access to justice-related occupations,' and, since most of the courses are transferable to various universities, learners 'can continue their studies at a university.' Moreover, the Program will help increase 'students' employability by developing' their 'communication and interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem solving abilities,' and 'public speaking and self-confidence' through courses utilizing 'a variety of teaching methods including lectures, group work, debates, and student presentations.'

Graduates may pursue various entry-level positions and/or educational opportunities in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related fields. Career-wise, for example, graduates can apply for positions in corrections and correctional facilities, court liaison work, emergency services, federal, municipal, and provincial law enforcement agencies and police services, protection agencies, and security agencies and firms. Some careers, however, will require further training and/or education. More advanced positions in criminal justice will necessitate further training and education, and graduates can pursue further educational opportunities at various institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada. Students should be aware that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the Criminal Justice field.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must either 'have completed BC secondary school graduation in any program or have completed the equivalent in another school system,' or 'lack one course for BC secondary school graduation or the equivalent in another school system,' or be '19 years of age or older on the first day of the first semester of attendance,' or be 'at least 17 years of age on the first day of the first semester of attendance and' have 'not been enrolled at a school for at least one year,' or be 'a special needs student and' have 'completed a certificate or equivalent from a special program and' have 'been in school for 12 years.' Furthermore, all applicants must demonstrate English Language proficiency by successfully completing English 12 with at least a "C" grade. The latter requirement may be met via an equivalent means including specified courses at Douglas College, specific courses or programs outside of the College, or an approved English language proficiency examination.
