WHMIS/Fire Extinguishers - Carlton Trail Regional College - Humboldt Campus

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is the national standard for hazard communications regarding hazardous or dangerous chemicals in Canada. The WHMIS has been developed and is implemented and coordinated through a partnership between the federal, provincial, and territorial governments. Under the WHMIS, the 'Federal Hazardous Products Act and associated Controlled Products Regulations,' which is administered by Health Canada, require that products, both domestic and imported, are correctly labeled and that, where applicable, a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), which lists the properties of a particular product and/or substance, is obtained. Furthermore, in accordance with the WHMIS, federal, provincial, and territorial agencies ensures that employers 'within their respective jurisdictions' meet occupational safety and health standards by ensuring 'that controlled products used, stored, handled or disposed of in the workplace are properly labeled, that MSDSs are made available to workers, and that workers receive education and training to ensure the safe storage, handling, use and disposal of controlled products in the workplace.'

WHMIS certification of employees is required for many careers or positions, such as in Firefighting, policing, and security. WHMIS training, even if not mandatory, can improve one's chances of being employed since it is an additional skill many employers will look upon favourably. The Carlton Trail Regional College at its Humboldt Campus offers WHMIS certification opportunities. WHMIS training including 'information on the dangers and safe handling of materials used in the workplace.' The College offers 2 primary courses. The WHMIS only course provides only the aforementioned training. The WHMIS/Fire Extinguishers courses provides the aforementioned education and training in 'the different types of fires and what fire extinguishers to use' for what and in which circumstances.
