Carpentry and Millwork - Heritage - Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology

Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology's Carpentry and Millwork - Heritage Diploma, offered at the Perth Campus, is a 2-year program primarily designed for students interested in specializing in the preservation, renovation, and restoration of historical architecture and buildings in Canada. The Program's first year concentrates on contemporary construction techniques, including finish carpentry, framing, and roofing, while the second year focuses on 'traditional building methods,' including joinery, often referred to as cabinetmaking, log construction, and timber framing. The Program's graduates will have the practical abilities to combine 'new construction technology with traditional carpentry techniques' allowing them to perform the wide array of carpentry tasks required to successfully complete preservation, 'renovation and restoration projects.' Graduates may pursue a wide range of career opportunities in the public and private sectors, 'including commercial, residential and general woodworking companies' or as freelance or self-employed carpenters.

Individuals who aspire to advance their careers as carpenters may be interested in pursuing further educational opportunities to refine and enhance their abilities, particularly via an apprenticeship. The latter is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work, in an indentured capacity, under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning, for a specified period of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade, typically via the completion of an apprenticeship. Graduates of the Carpentry and Millwork - Heritage program may qualify for advanced credits towards an apprenticeship.

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Moreover, journeypersons may, after obtaining several years of experience beyond an apprenticeship, become educators, supervisors, and/or trainers of their trade.

Admission to the Carpentry and Millwork - Heritage program is a two-stage process. Firstly, applicants must be admitted to the College. Applicants under 19 years of age must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Individuals with an OSSD or equivalent who completed Basic Level senior English and/or Mathematics courses, Open courses, or Workplace courses 'will be tested to determine their eligibility for admission.' Applicants who do not possess a high school diploma but who are 19 years of age or older may apply as a Mature Student. The latter's 'eligibility may be determined by academic achievement testing for which a fee of $40.00 will be charged.' Secondly, to qualify for the Program, applicants must have taken Grade 11 Mathematics (MBF3C or equivalent) and Grade 12 English (ENG4C or equivalent). An applicant's abilities in English and/or Mathematics will be a factor in determining acceptance into the Program in instances where 'the number of qualified applicants exceed the number of available places.'
