Architectural Heritage and Building Renovation (Applied Certificate) - Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology

At the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST), an applied certificate is a credential issued 'for the successful completion of credit programs that provide introductory level skills training in a specific application of an occupation.' SIAST's 100-hour Applied Certificate in Architectural Heritage and Building Renovation will provide students with the specialized skills required in the assessment, preservation, renovation, and even marketing of older buildings. The Program will make heavy use of group study and individualized projects, and 'in addition to some required material' learners will be afforded 'several areas of elective study' enabling them to 'adapt the applied certificate to' their respective areas 'of expertise and interest.' The Program is meant to appeal primarily to builders, carpenters, contractors, developers, and others involved in the construction and/or renovation industries, as well as realtors and municipal building officials.

The Student may obtain his/her applied certificate in any of 3 methods. Firstly, he/she may tale individual SIAST 'extension courses in Saskatoon and Regina whenever local heritage groups request them.' If the student accumulates the required credits through this method, he/she 'may earn the applied certificate.'

Through the second method, students enrolled in the Architectural and Building Technologies Program will have 'the material for the applied certificate' included in the former's 4th semester. Qualified students who are 'not in the Architectural and Building Technologies Program' will be able to 'attend the fourth semester (May to July) at Palliser Campus (Moose Jaw) and earn' their applied certificates.

The third method applied only to those enrolled in the Architectural and Building Technologies Diploma Program. Students of the latter may take the proper electives for the Architectural Heritage and Building Renovation program and graduate with both the Diploma and Applied Certificate.

To qualify for admission into the Architectural Heritage and Building Renovation program, applicants will normally require to have completed at least Grade 12, or equivalent. However, prospective students 'who do not possess the academic qualifications for the program may be admitted if evidence of probable success can be established.' Applicants with previous relevant work experience and/or training/education may qualify for advanced for advanced credit for the Program via 'Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition.' For further information about PLAR, interested individuals should contact a PLAR counselor or call 1-866-467-4278.

Applicants should also be aware that SIAST's primary language of instruction if English. As such, if the prospective student's 'primary language is not English,' he/she 'will need to provide evidence of having the English language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing needed to be successful in the' program for which he/she is applying. Applicants whose 'first or primary language is not English' are advised to contact one of the SIAST's Counselors 'for more information about satisfying the English Language Requirement.'
