Police Foundations - Canadore College

Canadore College's 2-year Police Foundations diploma is a career-oriented program designed for individuals who aspire to a career in policing or related areas, like private investigation or private security. Candidates will be trained in the academic, practical, and physical abilities to challenge the various entrance assessments, examinations, and/or programs that police departments may require as part of their hiring process. Students 'will have the opportunity to explore this profession, both inside and outside the classroom, as' they will 'routinely get involved in extracurricular projects with local and regional police agencies,' such as 'with the Ontario Provincial Police.'

A unique aspect of the Program is the opportunity for learners to participate in the Summer Ambassador Program. The latter is 'a paid placement program where students have the chance to work alongside North Bay Police Officers' serving 'as extra eyes and ears in North BayÆs downtown core and waterfront, by patrolling the city on mountain bicycles and foot.' The Ambassador Program also 'helps prevent crime, build community relations and most importantly offers a hands-on learning experience for students looking to pursue a career in law enforcement.' The Police Foundations program's faculty has 'collectively over 100 years of experience in the criminal justice field, primarily in policing and are very committed to the success of Police Foundations students,' and 'the limited class size allows for faculty to get to know' students, ensuring the latter achieve their respective 'academic goals.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue careers, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in policing, corrections, security, and other related areas of the criminal justice system. Students should be aware, however, that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the Criminal Justice field as many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history. Moreover, some careers may require further training or requirements beyond the diploma, as determined by individual employers. Most police departments, for example, require candidates to write assessment examinations, meet certain physical and psychological pre-requisites, have valid CPR, First Aid, and driver's license, and undergo recruit training. In Ontario, for instance, in accordance with the regulations established by Police Services, the recruitment process for police constables utilizes Criminal Record Check and Pardon Process, Physical Readiness Evaluations for Police (PREP), which measures a candidate's physical, including hearing and vision, and fitness capabilities via profession-relevant exercises, and Written Communication Tests (WCT).

Career-wise, graduates may be employed in various positions across Canada, including working for educational or governmental institutions, private organizations, or for employers in the non-profit or private sector. For example, graduates may work in the areas of administration, corrections, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, government, insurance, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, private and public investigation, public and private security, the courts, victim services, and young offenders, to name but a few. Potential employers for graduates include Canada Customs and Immigration, correctional facilities, federal and provincial law enforcement agencies, juvenile detention centres, military police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and various municipal police forces.

Graduates of the Program may also pursue further educational opportunities, such as at the bachelor's level, in policing, related criminal justice fields, or other disciplines at various universities, colleges, and institutes across Canada and internationally, often with advanced standing. The College has 'a Criminal Justice Degree Completion Agreement' with Nipissing University that will enable 'graduates of CanadoreÆs Police Foundations program with an avenue for continuing their education leading to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminal Justice degree at' the University.' To take advantage of the Agreement, however, students must graduate the Diploma program 'with a 3.5 program GPA can apply to the university and, if accepted, can complete this four-year' undergraduate 'program in 2.5 years.'

To be eligible for admission to the Diploma Program, applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), 'at or above the general level or its equivalent', including 'Grade 12 English or equivalent.' Applicants who attained their diplomas via 'the new Ontario Secondary School Curriculum' must have taken 'with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/ College (M), or Open (O) preparation levels,' including 'Grade 12 Compulsory English (ENG 4C or ENG 4U).' Prospective students who are residents of Ontario, at least 19 years of age by the commencement of the Program, and do not have 'the OSSD will be considered on the basis of their results on the College's Mature Student Test.' Although not required for admission, the College recommends that students complete 'Grade 11 (M) Understanding Canadian Law, (CLU 3M), Grade 12 (M) Individuals and Families in a Diverse Society, (HHS 4M), and Grade 12 (C) Recreation and Fitness Leadership, (PLF 4C).'

All applicants must also complete a 'Health Centre Form including medical history, immunization record, Hepatitis B vaccination, and Tuberculosis (TB) test .'
