PROGRAM WEBSITE
Law Enforcement (Advanced Law Enforcement and Investigations) - Durham College

Through a combination 'of academic, practical and field experience,' Durham College's 2-year Diploma in Law and Security Administration is designed to equip learners with the a broad range of knowledge and skills required to work in a 'diverse range of career options' in criminal justice system administration. It is the belief of the College that students' interests are best served by graduating with a general rather than specialized knowledge of criminal justice administration, and the Program's 'curriculum reflects a commitment to the highest quality education so students have every opportunity to enhance their chosen careers.' During the final year of the Program, students will have an opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via a work experience placement in a relevant workplace setting. The Placement will give participants 'a direct, supervised, hands-on experience in law enforcement that will help them launch their careers.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue various careers, career advancement, and/or further education in security and related areas. Career-wise, graduates may apply for employment in various government security agencies at the both federal and provincial levels, private security firms, and with numerous other employers. For instance, graduates may assume positions as bylaw enforcement officer, casino security officer, correctional officer, customs officer, government enforcement or investigator, hotel security officer, industrial and commercial security, police officer, private investigator, and youth worker. Students should be aware that some careers may require further training, as determined by individual employers; in addition, individuals possessing a criminal record may find it difficult to attain employment in criminal justice and related fields.

Graduates of the Program may also advance their education and/or training in criminal justice administration or related areas, such as conservation enforcement, corrections, court and tribunal agents, criminal justice, criminology, firefight and emergency care, investigation, police, and probation, at various institutes and colleges across Canada and internationally, often with advanced standing. For example, graduates can take advantage of one of the College existing transfer agreements with Athabasca University, McMaster University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, or University of Western Sydney. Graduates may also pursue related graduate certificates at Durham College including Court and Tribunal Agent / Paralegal, Penology and Youth, and Public and Private Investigations.

To be eligible for admission into the Law and Security Administration program, applicants must have either an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, Academic and Career Entrance Program (ACE), Basic Training for Skills Development (BTSD), or General Educational Development (GED). Applicants must also have completed senior level (Grade 11 or higher) subject credits, including General (G), Advanced (A), OAC, College Preparation (C), University/College Preparation (M), University Preparation (U) or Postsecondary (college or university), and Grade 12 English. Applicants who do not have the aforementioned credentials and who are 19 years of age or older by the commencement of the Program may apply under "mature student status." Furthermore, applicants 'with post-secondary credits may be considered for advanced standing on an individual basis.' If a Program becomes oversubscribed, that is, the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available seats, the College will prioritize applicants thusly: 'permanent residents of Ontario, permanent residents of other provinces and territories in Canada, applicants from other countries.'

Prospective students should be aware that 'some work experience employers require current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid certificates.' In addition, some employers may require a Police Record Check (PRC) for the work experience placement of the Program. Students will be responsible for all costs associated with acquiring the aforementioned certification as well as the PRC. Students who have 'criminal charges pending or a criminal record (criminal convictions must be pardoned, sealed or expunged) may be denied the opportunity to do field placement.'
