The Justice Institute of British Columbia's 'nine and a half week' Deputy Sheriff Employment Readiness Program is targeted at individuals aspiring to a career as Deputy Sheriffs by equipping learners with the 'the skills and knowledge to undertake the duties and responsibilities' of this position. Deputy Sheriffs, which is part of Court Services, are chiefly responsible for performing bailiff services for various courts, which may include court security, execution of civil judgements, prisoner transfers, and serving of legal notices.

The Program 'is delivered at the Justice Institute of B.C. by the Courts Academy as often as is required to meet Court Services hiring projections.' However, prospective students should be aware that while they will be 'well prepared to compete for Deputy Sheriff positions in court locations throughout the province,' they will not be guaranteed employment after graduation or anytime thereafter. The Institute suggests that the best candidates for a Deputy Sheriff position are those best 'able to exercise good judgment, make quick decisions and give instructions or directions in emergencies,' ' tolerate routine,' and 'stressful situations and tense interpersonal encounters while maintaining self-control,' effectively communicate both in writing and verbally, and 'manage hostile and violent persons effectively.' Furthermore, the best candidates should be physically fit and have a regiment that will keep them as such.

Candidates for the Program must 'be 19 years old or older' and possess a high school diploma, or equivalent, such as the General Educational Development (GED), 'a valid class 5 driver's license - to be included with application form,' and 'a valid First Aid Certificate with CPR-C.(Occupational Level One preferred),' and a 'Language Proficiency Index, Level 4 or higher.' Applicants must also 'be eligible to work in Canada on a permanent basis,' submit both 'a current driver's abstract - no older than 30 days from application date' (applicants with 'a cumulative total of more than nine penalty points will not be accepted into the program) and 'an ICBC claims history letter - no older than 30 days from application date (ICBC claims history prerequisites to be determined),' undergo 'a criminal record search (a clean record is mandatory),' and 'have attained a level of physical fitness that will allow safe participation in the physically demanding activities that are part of the program.' Prospective students will also have to meet minimum eyesight requirement. Normally, 'corrected visual acuity; either eye must not exceed 20/30 acuity' while 'uncorrected visual acuity; either eye must not exceed 20/100 acuity,' and colour deficiency must not exceed one error out of 16 plates or 2 errors out of 24 plates on the Ishihara Test. Where the Ishihara Test is failed, the applicant will be provided the opportunity to pass the Farnsworth Test.' Eyesight must also meet 'normal range of binocular function.'

Prior to being admitted, applicants must go through a screening process which will take into account their respective 'minimum requirements and preferred credentials, physical fitness and abilities, criminal record, judgement and personal interaction skills, and verbal and written communication skills.' The 'screening will be conducted throughout the province in several stages,' and applicants accepted into the Program must 'obtain a class 4 unrestricted driver's license as a condition of final acceptance.'
