Law and Security - Nova Scotia Community College

Nova Scotia Community College's 35-week Certificate in Law and Security program exposes students to the theory, knowledge, and skills required to work in various areas of security and related fields and agencies including how to protect oneself and others and how 'to conduct investigations.' The Program 'meets and exceeds federal and provincial standards for security officers,' as well as 'the standards set by the Canadian Standards Board for uniformed security,' and 'is recognized by the Canadian Society for Industrial Security.' Students will be subject to a comprehensive education in security that includes 'guest lectures and workshops in firearms safety, suicide intervention, critical and stress management, non-violent crisis management and Canadian Safety Council defensive driving.' Among the major topics to be covered by the Program are Basic Protection Officer, Canadian Criminal Justice, Criminal Law and Criminal Code, Defence Tactics, Defensive Driving, Firearms Safety, Fitness, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act of Nova Scotia, Physical Security Survey, Police Powers, Psychology, Retail Security, Security Investigations, Stress Resilience, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

Students will also have the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations via a work experience placement 'in an actual law or security environment.' During the Placement, 'the student will be able to demonstrate and practice some of the knowledge and skills learned throughout the program, and at the same time gain valuable experience in a law or security environment.' Graduates of 'the Law and Security program may qualify for advanced entry into' the College's 'Correctional Services program.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue various careers, career advancement, and/or further education in security and related areas. Career-wise, graduates will be 'qualified to work as protection officers in government and private sector security and private policing organizations, and they qualify for positions where certification is required.' According to the College, approximately of the Program's 'graduates are employed as security officers.' Many graduates have entered into the College's 'Correctional Services program or into policing and law enforcement education beyond the college, becoming fisheries and conservation officers and trainees with municipal or provincial police forces or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.'

To be eligible for admission into the Law and Security program, applicants must have a secondary school diploma, or equivalent, and must be 19 years or older before commencing the work experience component of the Certificate. Prior work or training 'experience in security, law enforcement, or in other supervisory capacities is considered an asset.' In addition, 'the successful applicant will be required to supply a current medical certificate stating that she/he is capable of strenuous physical activity.' Students should note that while enrolled in the Program, students must 'wear a uniform while attending campus and during the Work Experience,' and 'will be required to purchase appropriate gym attire for fitness and defense tactics courses.' All extra fees arising from the aforementioned requirements or subsequent activities, such as transportation during the work experience, 'voluntary programming or certification,' is the responsibility of the student.
