Law and Security Administration - Security and Risk Management - Sir Sandford Fleming College

Combining theoretical and practical education, Sir Sandford Fleming College's 2-year Diploma in Law and Security Administration - Security and Risk Management is designed to equip learners with the a broad range of knowledge and skills required 'to operate on many levels within a multi-discipline security organization,' including 'training in crime prevention through environmental design' and 'a proactive approach to new concepts in technology.' The Program further 'offers faculty with real-life experience and industry contact, an advisory committee of senior security managers, and partnerships with local municipalities, corporations and emergency services.'

The first semester of the Program will share its curriculum with the College's other Law and Justice diploma programs and provides 'a solid knowledge base and an overview of the career opportunities available' as well as an opportunity to explore 'options and to make an informed decision about' one's 'program and career choice.' Upon successful completion of the first semester, students can either advance with the current program or transfer to another diploma program within the School of Law and Justice. From the second semester onwards, students enrolled in the Security and Risk Manager program will focus their studies in this field including Crime Scene Investigation, Criminology, Fire and Safety Management, Issues in Diversity, Ontario Fire Code Applications, Physical Security, and Private Investigation Techniques. Learners will also engage in hands-on learning such as working 'n security and fire assessment and planning and support projects with partners in the community.'

During the second year of the Program students will also have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via a 120-hour work experience placement in a relevant setting with one of the College's community partners in the security industry. Students may be required to submit a criminal record check before being placed, and those with a criminal history may be limited in placement opportunities.

Graduates of the Program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of security and related areas of the criminal justice system. Career-wise, graduates will 'be in demand as a specialist and manager with applicable specialized training; and may apply for employment in government security agencies at both the federal and provincial levels, public and private security, and numerous other employers. For example, graduates may assume such positions as ATM armed escort, casino security officer, corporate investigator, executive protection consultant, event security management specialist, fire and safety security specialist, government enforcement officer, hospital/hotel security officer, protection officer, private investigator, risk management specialist, and security manager.

On average 'in the Canadian industrial security industry, security managers or professionals with several years of experience and education can expect to make $45,000.00 - $65,000.00 annually.' Students should be aware, however, that some positions may require further training depending on the demands of the employer. In addition, individuals with a criminal record may find it difficult to find employment in security and related fields as, because of the nature of the work involved, employers in this field are often reluctant to hire those with a record.

Graduates may also further their respective training and education at various colleges, universities, and institutions often with advanced credit. For example, graduates can take advantage of one of the College's existing transfer agreements with Athabasca University, Ryerson University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, and University of Windsor.

To be eligible for the Program, applicants must possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) 'with the majority of credits at the College (C) and Open (O) level, including two English credits in the College (C) stream.'

Individuals 'who do not possess an OSSD, but who will be 19 years of age before the commencement of classes, and 'can demonstrate potential for success in college studies' may apply via "mature student status." The latter, however, 'will be required to write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test.' Prospective students who have graduated university are eligible for 'direct entry into second semester of this program,' and can this 'graduate in as little as 12 months.'
