PROGRAM WEBSITE
Security Management - Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology

Combining theoretical and practical education, Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology 2-year Diploma in Security Management equips 'students with the skills and abilities at the management or specialty level for the security sector.' The Program involves 'the study and application of security principles with respect to protection of personnel, assets and information, the law, investigative techniques, ethnic/human relations, supervisory and management skills, computers, crisis intervention and threat risk analysis.' Candidates will have the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations via two, 160-hour work experience placements, in the final year of the Program, at relevant settings like commercial, government, industrial, and institutional establishments. During the Placement, students will work 'under the guidance and supervision of a mentoring security manager' and 'experience the multi-faceted world of security.' To qualify for the Placements, students must normally successfully complete first three semesters with a "C" average (grade point average of 2.0).' Furthermore, 'in addition to the Leadership Certificate provided to successful applicants, the program has four scholarships awarded to deserving graduates.'

Career-wise, graduates will be most 'qualified to work as security professionals in private corporations, government, private investigations or policing.' Furthermore, graduates will qualify 'to apply and receive the designation, Certified Security Supervisor (CSS) from the Canadian Society for Industrial Security.' Students should be aware, however, that some employers might require employees to have credentials beyond that supplied by the diploma. Also, due to the nature of the work that will be performed, individuals with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment insecurity and related fields as many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history.

Graduates of the Program may also pursue further education in security or related areas at various institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada, often with advanced standing. For example, the College has an Articulation Agreement with Athabasca University by which 'graduates of the Security Management Program' may receive up to '60 credits towards the degree of Bachelor of Professional Arts-Criminal Justice' at the University.

To be eligible for admission to the Security Management program, applicants must either have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Prospective students having earned an OSSD with 'senior English and/or mathematics courses at the Basic Level, or with Workplace or Open courses, will be tested to determine their eligibility for admission.' Individuals who do not have a high school diploma and are 19 years of age or older may apply via "mature student status;" however, the latter may be required to write an academic achievement test before a decision regarding their respective applications is made. All applicants must also have successfully complete English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent).

The prospective student should be aware that in order 'to participate in clinical/field placements' he/she 'must submit proof of a clear Police Record Check to the Program Department prior to the beginning of classes.' An applicant who has an unpardoned criminal record may be disqualified from participation in work placements and thus will be unable to graduate. Applicants with an unpardoned criminal record should consult 'with the Departmental Chair prior to the first day of classes.' Each student will be responsible for obtaining a criminal record check and for all associated costs thereof.
