Wood Products Manufacturing - British Columbia Institute of Technology

British Columbia Institute of Technology's (BCIT's) Associate Certificate in Wood Products Manufacturing Technology (primary and secondary manufacturing) is a part-time program which has been developed in response 'to the growing demand for training in the secondary manufacturing of wood products' primarily of the Province of British Columbia. Although the Program is designed for anyone aspiring to a career in wood products manufacturing, it is especially targeted at those employed in primary or secondary manufacturing who want to advance their technical knowledge of their respective sectors 'and acquire related skills' and/or for workers in primary manufacturing wanting to pursue a career in secondary manufacturing. To successfully complete the Program, students must fulfill 22 total credits comprised of 13 credits from mandatory classes and at least 9 credits from 'specialty courses.' Even though there are no set prerequisites to register for the Program, BCIT assumes that learners have successfully taken high school senior English, Mathematics, and Science or equivalents.

Graduates of the program may pursue employment, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in wood products manufacturing or related fields. Career-wise, generally, woodworkers will most often employed indoors in various aspects of the construction, wood, and wood products manufacturing industries. Potential employers include companies, contractors, custom and repair shops, hardware stores, manufacturers, retail stores, and private individuals. Among the numerous areas in which woodworkers may work include cabinetmaking, design operations, furniture or other wood products manufacturing, interior finishing and design, repair, restoration, renovation, and/or sales. In the construction industry, for example, woodworkers typically construct, install, renovate, repair, and/or restore the interior woodwork of commercial, residential, and other buildings.

Potentially, graduates can further their respective training in wood products manufacturing such as via an apprenticeship. The latter is a method of learning a trade through a combination of periods of in-class, technical/theoretical education and periods of paid, on-the-job training. During the latter portions of an apprenticeship, the student (apprentice) will work under the direction of a certified, journeyperson member of the trade one is learning for a specified amount of time. A journeyperson is an individual who has earned the standards of practice of his/her trade, typically via the completion of an apprenticeship. Graduates of the Associate Certificate in Wood Products Manufacturing Technology may qualify for advanced credits towards an apprenticeship.

The advantage of completing an apprenticeship is not only that one acquires in-depth knowledge and skills in a trade but also that, within the latter, one's career opportunities and salary potential are normally increased. Furthermore, once an individual has obtained journeyperson status, he/she may be eligible to have his/her certification as such endorsed by the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (Red Seal). The latter enables the journeyperson to practice his/her trade throughout Canada, provided the trade is designated in that locale, without undergoing further examinations. Moreover, persons who obtain journeyperson status may, after accruing several years of work experience beyond the apprenticeship, become supervisors, trainers, and/or educators of their trade.
