Overview

Successful candidates will enter the Water Survey of Canada's Hydrometric Technician Apprenticeship or Professional Training Program (HTAPTP), which ensures the availability of well qualified and trained Hydrometric Technologists. The HTAPTP provides nationally uniform training, crucial in the support of Water Survey national standards and the provision of a safe working environment. Participants enter the HTAPTP at the EG-03 level, receiving formal and On-the-Job-Training for a minimum of 18 months. Participants will receive extensive occupational safety and health training and basic hydrometric technical training. At the EG-04 level, training will be primarily on the job training over a minimum of two years. During this period, operational and technical responsibilities for the Hydrometric Technician will increase. Upon graduation from the HTAPTP, participants are appointed to the EG-05 level and are considered ready for full operational and technical responsibilities.


Experience and Qualifications

Education: Successful completion of a recognized post-secondary program in environmental science or environmental engineering technology normally acquired with a minimum of 2000 hours. The diploma must be obtained no later than May31, 2009.


  • Language: English essential or bilingual.
  • Experience in conducting field surveys in environmental monitoring,

  • Experience in operating a personal computer and in applying standard software applications (such as MS Office)

  • Knowledge of basic occupational safety and health procedures.
  • Knowledge of hydrology and open channel hydraulics
  • Knowledge of land surveying

  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement routine field and office projects.
  • Ability to maintain neat, timely and accurate records.
  • Ability to use computer software such as Word and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in one of the following: civil engineering; hydrology; or instrumentation;

  • Experience in conducting environmental monitoring pertaining to water quantity and/or land surveys.

  • Experience in operating surveying instruments, data loggers and/or hydro met sensors.

  • Experience operating small boats as certified by the Canadian Power Squadron or a MED A3 certificate.
