Overview

Takuvik was created by University Laval (UL - Canada) and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CRNS - France) as a joint laboratory studying the Arctic ecosystems and lead by Pr. Marcel Babin and it was launched on January 1, 2011. Takuvik is located at UL, in Québec city, Canada where the CNRS employees are also located on a full-time basis. The Takuvik program is designed to study both ocean, under the Canadian Excellence Research Chair in remote sensing of the Canadian's new frontier, and land ecosystems as well as the interaction between the two components.
The Chair research group will comprise three tandems of senior research associates and technicians involved respectively in (1) the process studies conducted in the laboratory and at sea; (2) the methodological development of remote sensing and data management tools; and (3) the optimization and development of new observing technologies. This permanent staff will supervise up to 11 Postdoctoral, 18 Doctoral, and 12 Master fellows funded by the CERC program. Additional students with external funding will also join the team.
The laboratory seeks a junior oceanographer/programmer to assist the Senior associate researcher for development of remote-sensing algorithms and data management tools.


Responsibilities

Tasks include:

  • Processing of ocean-colour data, maintenance of the in situ database and archiving the various geophysical products derived from measurements of ocean colour,
  • The development of physical models to interpret oceancolour data and automation of the process.
  • Data analysis and dissemination of results
    Duties:
  • Participate in the identification of objectives of research projects, conduct studies and research arising there from;
  • Perform the main tasks of a research project and assist the principal investigator in other research activities when necessary;
  • Work under minimal supervision and be responsible for the quality and relevance of the research results.
  • Planning the establishment and administration of data collection tools or systems (may be called upon to improve or adapt existing methods).
  • Participation in training and supervision of students and other research professionals affiliated with the research project.
  • Analysis and interpretation of research results with methods currently in use, writing reports and dissemination of results.

  • Experience and Qualifications

    Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Experience in one of the following programming language: C, Python, Fortran. Knowledge of batch processing of satellite images (IDL and Matlab) would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of the principles of oceanography, knowledge of the principles of marine optics would be an asset.
  • Academic degree sought: Master’s degree is mandatory
    Requirements: Good level of English and French (comprehension, spoken and written). A minimum of 1 year experience required. Start date: 2011-09-01, End Date: 2012-03-31. Option to renew the contract for the next 5 years.
