Category:Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical
Deadline: 1/1/2013: Expired
Location:Sherbrooke, Quebec

Overview

I are looking for motivated students to complete M.Sc. or Ph.D. studies. The overall objective of my research is to discover novel types of DNA damage, study the chemistry and biochemistry of this damage, and develop analytically methods for the detection of damage in cells (see Wagner and Cadet, Acc. Chem. Res. (2010) 43, 564-571). Free radicals constantly challenge DNA integrity. These radicals are produced in copious amounts by biological processes, such as oxidative phosphorylation and inflammation. They are also generated at toxic levels by ionizing radiation (X-rays and charged particles), ultraviolet light, and certain drugs. The formation of DNA damage, which is counterbalanced in cells by DNA repair, is important in understanding cancer etiology and developing novel therapies to treat cancer.

Responsibilities

The student is expected to pursue challenging projects in fundamental research. The student will receive expert training in the analysis of DNA damage by LC-MS/MS, the synthesis of modified nucleosides and oligonucleotides, and the generation of free radicals by radiation and biological processes.

Experience and Qualifications

B.Sc. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biology with a GPA > 2.6/4.0.
