Undergraduate Law Degrees

Academically, at the undergraduate level, the Faculty offers a 3-year Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), 3 joint degrees, a National Program in Civil Law, and a National Program in Common Law. The LL.B has concentration opportunities in several areas including Environmental Law, International Law, Law and Technology, and Social Justice. Furthermore, the LL.B may be combined with a Master of Arts in International Affairs (offered in partnership with the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University), Master of Business Administration, and Juris Doctor (taught in cooperation with the American University's Washington College of Law and Michigan State University College of Law).

The latter degree will qualify students to obtain the right to fully practice law in both Canada and the USA. Students in their respective 2nd and 3rd years of LL.B studies may earn course credit studying abroad for a period of up to one year. The Faculty, via the University of Ottawa, has formal exchange agreements with numerous institutions around the world. Additionally, the National Program in Civil Law (LL.L - National) allows LL.B. graduates to pursue an extra year of study and earn a joint common law/civil law (LL.B/LL.L) degree. Students who aspire to this program must 'be able to read and understand French.' Conversely, the Faculty's National Program in Common Law (LL.B - National) is designed as 'a bilingual 30-credit program for Canadian Civil Law graduates' to achieve ability in common law. Thus, both the LL.L and LL.B National Programs enable students to attain qualifications in both of the world's major legal systems.

Graduate Law Degrees

At the graduate level, the Faculty proffers both a Master of Laws (LL.M) and Doctorate of Laws (LL.D). The LL.M has concentration opportunities in Civil Law Theory, Law and Technology, Women's Studies, and common law et commerce international (available only in French). The LL.D. is primarily 'a research program leading to the preparation of a thesis under the supervision of a member of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.'
