April 10, 2006 Source: : http://www.ucalgary.ca/news/april06/convo-egoyan.html Atom Egoyan guest-stars at spring convocation Acclaimed Canadian film-maker Atom Egoyan, former Canadian Football League Commissioner Douglas Mitchell, Calgary arts patron and community activist Mary Rozsa de Coquet and outgoing U of C Students’ Union President Bryan West are among the 16 respected and talented individuals who will be conferred with the University of Calgary’s highest honours in convocation ceremonies taking place between May 11 and June 9, 2006. "We have chosen to recognize some of the world’s brightest scholars, devoted community members and talented artists," said Chancellor Bill Warren, who will preside over the last set of convocations during his four-year term as U of C chancellor. "Convocations will be particularly special for everyone this year, since they fall on the university’s 40th anniversary." The schedule for May/June convocations and recipients of Honorary Degrees (HD) and the Order of the University of Calgary (OTUC) are as follows: Thursday, May 11 – 2:00 p.m. (Faculties of Medicine and Law) Balfour MountDr. Balfour Mount (HD) – has worked relentlessly and provided vision, leadership, dedication and compassionate advocacy for people with terminal illnesses and their families. Identified as a father of palliative care, Dr. Mount is responsible for Canada being recognized internationally as a leader in innovation and implementation of high quality end of life care. Prof. Christopher Levy (OTUC) – In addition to his work in the Faculty of Law, Chris Levy has given freely of his time and energy to make U of C a leader in research ethics across the country. His other University service includes involvement with the U of C Faculty Association, and in the community he has worked with the Alberta Law Reform Institute, the Calgary Rape Crisis Centre and the Calgary Multicultural Centre. Monday, June 5 – 2:00 p.m. (Schulich School of Engineering) Ms. Margaret (Peggy) Simons (OTUC) – retired as Associate Dean, Schulich School of Engineering in 2002, however, she remains tireless in her support of the University of Calgary. She was instrumental in developing the Minds in Motion program with a mandate to bring to young people enriched experience and knowledge in science, engineering and technology. Tuesday, June 6 – 9:30 a.m. (Faculties of Kinesiology and Science) MitchellMr. Douglas Mitchell (HD) - has made distinguished contributions to higher education, sport, business and law. This leader in the Canadian legal profession is also described as a sports icon. A former athlete and professional football player, he has been an outstanding supporter of inter-university athletics in Canada for well over three decades. Past president of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, he was Commissioner of the CFL from 1984 to 1989, and has demonstrated keen interest in post secondary education through his service as Chair of the Board of SAIT. Ms. Norma Klein (OTUC) – is known for her exceptional work ethic and role as an exemplary counsellor and ambassador. Now retired, she held senior staff positions with the Faculty of Science and the Department of Biological Sciences. As an advisor working in a very large academic department, she always made that extra effort and took the extra time to offer caring counsel. Tuesday, June 6 – 2:00 p.m. (Faculty of Science) LovaszDr. Laszlo Lovasz (HD) - is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians and computer scientists of our time. He is one of the founders of the special international university program in mathematics called "Budapest Semesters", which is a highly popular semester program in Budapest introducing mathematics and research for the future generations of mathematicians. His easy and accessible lecture style has led to invitations to numerous leading universities around the world, including Princeton and Yale where he served as a professor. Dr. Finley Campbell (OTUC) – has dedicated more than 30 years of service to the U of C, including several vice-presidential portfolios. Recognized for his academic insight and managerial skills, he was founder and builder. The relationship that he built with the professional geology community greatly enhanced the quality of the geology programs and the stature of the University of Calgary. Wednesday, June 7 – 9:30 a.m. (Faculty of Social Sciences) PiperDr. Martha Piper (HD) – has had a distinguished academic career as a scholar, teacher, and researcher, as a Vice-President Research, and most recently as a university President. A strong and vocal advocate for the support of universities with the federal government, and effecting considerable influence on many organizations and individuals, she has made a significant contribution to the improvement of the post secondary education system in Canada. Ms. Judith Romanchuk (OTUC) – has contributed decades of service to the U of C in a variety of significant ways. An outstanding advocate locally, nationally and internationally as Honorary Consul of Finland, she is a past member of the Haskayne School of Business advisory council, and since 2001 has chaired of the Faculty of Social Sciences Community Advisory Board. Wednesday, June 7 – 2:00 p.m. (Faculty of Social Sciences) Mr. Sidney Cyngiser (HD) – has devoted himself to making presentations to educate people about the Holocaust and his own experiences. Offered to groups in schools colleges and universities and to service clubs, his talks have the important goal of teaching the tragedy of the Holocaust and the lessons learned in order to recognize and confront racism, hatred and intolerance in our society. Thursday, June 8 – 9:30 a.m. (Faculties of Fine Arts, Humanities and Nursing) Mary Rozsa de CoquetMs. Mary Rozsa de Coquet (HD) – is a community leader, a patron and developer of artistic life. She has a deep interest and loyalty to the University of Calgary where she received a Bachelor of Education degree and Diploma in Education. Her quiet diligence has creatively advanced the well being and civility of the community, her involvement with civic affairs growing out of concern for inner-city development. Prof. William Laing (OTUC) – is a versatile researcher and teacher in the Faculty of Fine Arts who has gained exemplary recognition over his 38 year career as a practicing printmaker. Prof. Laing brings together the interests of students, faculty, the wider Calgary community, and international colleagues as well. He developed and supports exchange programs offering students invaluable international learning experiences. Thursday, June 8 – 2:00 p.m. (Haskayne School of Business) Mr. Frederick Mannix (HD) – is a prominent Calgarian, Albertan and Canadian who has also been a strong supporter of the University of Calgary for many years. This man of vision is keenly interested in the Canadian military, and he has worked diligently and collaboratively to promote an active defence program, and Canadian foreign policy. Locally, his considerable initiative led to the development of a unique agreement between the Museum of the Regiments and the U of C Information Resources and Archives. .. Friday, June 9 – 9:30 a.m. (Faculties of Communication & Culture, Environmental Design and Social Work) EgoyanMr. Atom Egoyan (HD) – is one of the most respected and talented Canadian cultural icons of our time. His films have explored issues of identity, multi-culturalism, marginalization and the need to establish human contacts and create strong community ties in the face of an alienating world. Widely recognized for his concern with the power of imagery in contemporary society, Egoyan has received recognition nationally and internationally. Prof. Helen Holmes (OTUC) – has served the University of Calgary for 25 years showing particular dedication to the needs of students. Her service to the University included three years as the President of the Faculty Association and she also served as President’s Advisor on the Status of Women. Holmes is currently with the Faculty of Communication & Culture and serves as the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the Undergraduate Programs Office. Friday, June 9 – 2:00 p.m. (Faculty of Education) westMr. Bryan West (OTUC) - served as Resident Students’ Association President in 2003 – 2004. His election to Students’ Union was first as External Commissioner, and then as President for two consecutive years (2004 – 2006). His initiatives included improved student and University finances – through renegotiation of Student Dental and Health Plan, funding for MacEwan Hall and the successful establishment of "Quality Funds" from the Board of Governors to support Students’ Union initiatives and projects. ..
