A specialist in applied mathematics, physics, engineering science and information processing, he has published hundreds of scientific papers and is editor-in-chief of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. Chien, who completed a PhD in mechanical and industrial engineering at the University of Toronto in 1942 and a master’s degree in 1941, is president of Shanghai University. He is also honorary chairman of the Central Committee of the Chinese Democratic League, director of the Shanghai Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics and former vice-chair of the People’s Political Consultative Conference. He has also been honoured with membership in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences. "The University of Toronto has approximately 400,000 alumni across the world," said Poy, who is in Shanghai as part of a visit to China by a senior delegation from the University of Toronto, "and Dr. Chien is one of the most distinguished of this group. He has been celebrated by scholarly societies and the wider public for decades. We’re proud to count him among our alumni and to join the long list of organizations that have paid tribute to him."
