The public is invited to book appointments for a dental screening clinic at the Nanaimo campus April 19. "It’s an annual event where students gain practical, hands-on training," said instructor Mandy Hayre. "They’ve practiced their skills on mannequins and each other, and are now ready to move on to the public." During hour-long appointments, clients will receive a quick visual exam by a dentist, who will prescribe necessary treatment that can be performed by dental assistant students. Clients meeting certain criteria will be invited back to Malaspina in May to receive dental services, including polishing, fluoride, x-rays, fissure sealants, and a procedure to de-sensitize problem teeth – all for the nominal fee of $15 for children and $20 to $35 for adults. Malaspina's dental assistant students have screened 200 people at two previous dental screening clinics held earlier this month. They expect to see another 100 people on April 19, but everyone needs an appointment. To book one, call 740-6240. Malaspina's 10-month Dental Assistant program has been in operation since 1970 and up to 35 students graduate each year. Dental Assistants trained at Malaspina work at dental practises all over Vancouver Island and beyond.
