April 17, 2006 Source: : http://communications.uwo.ca/media_newsroom/story.html?listing_id=21193 East Meets West -- Integrated, Compassionate Medicine for the 21st Century London, ON. - Medical schools, including the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario, are adapting their curriculum to incorporate Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Dr. Steven Aung, renowned practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), will share his vision for integrated, compassionate health care during a three-day visit to Western starting tomorrow. He will be meeting with Schulich faculty on Tuesday, April 18 to discuss the "East meets West" philosophy. The workshop will be held in the Medical Sciences Building, Room 2730 starting at 9 a.m. Aung's main lecture titled "Integrated Compassionate Medicine for the 21st Century and Beyond" will be held Thursday at noon at University Hospital, Auditorium A. He will also give a public lecture and demonstration of Medical Calligraphy, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the London Convention Centre. Admission is five dollars. Each day will start off with energizing Qi Gong exercises. Aung says "Qi Gong has always been a part of the basic training for TCM as a therapy for patients and as a preventative and self care strategy for both patients and physicians." The exercise focuses on breathing, concentration and posture. It is open to the public and will take place on Tuesday April 18, and Thursday April 20, at 7 a.m. at Western in front of the University Community Centre (UCC). On Wednesday morning, Aung will lead Qi Gong at the Covent Garden Market in downtown London. Aung is a family physician and an associate clinical professor in the Departments of Medicine and Family Medicine at the University of Alberta.
