April 18, 2006 Source: : http://www.mta.ca/news/?id=1002 Mount A's Music Department hosts the 54th Sackville Music Festival, April 24-30 SACKVILLE, NB — More than 500 young musicians from Westmorland and Cumberland counties will come together in Mount Allison’s Marjorie Young Bell Conservatory of Music to perform in piano, string, wind, percussion, voice, speech, and choral classes at the 54th annual Sackville Music Festival, the week of April 24 -30. The Department of Music is delighted to continue its association with the Sackville Music Festival this year," states department head Dr. Gary Tucker. "Music festivals are a wonderful opportunity for the musical and personal growth of young people. Sackville is lucky to have the community support that allows our festival to enrich the culture of this region." Adjudicated classes, offered throughout the week, are designed to foster the individual talents of young musicians and provide a friendly and supportive environment for musical performance. This year’s festival features 420 entries in more than 200 classes, a significant increase over previous years. The Festival adjudicators - Richard Boulanger (piano), Linda Sprague (piano sight-reading), Christopher Buckley (strings), Ivor Rothwell (winds and percussion), and Melody Dobson (voice, choir, and speech) — have extensive backgrounds in music performance and education. Festival classes begin on the morning of Monday, April 24, and continue until the afternoon of Saturday, April 29, using Brunton Auditorium, the Choral Room, and the Band Room of the Conservatory as venues. A Final Concert featuring the Festival’s outstanding performers will be held in Brunton Auditorium at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 30. All events associated with the Sackville Music Festival, with the exception of sight-reading classes, are open to the public. Adults are asked to pay a small fee to gain admission to the Festival classes. There is no admission fee for the Final Concert, but a freewill offering will be taken to offset Festival expenses. Festival programs are available for purchase at the door, and at the following locations: Jean Coutu Pharmacy and Tidewater Books (Sackville), and the Amherst Music Centre. The Sackville Music Festival Committee works year-round to promote and encourage music education in our region. In 2003 and 2004, the committee joined with Mount Allison’s Department of Music to present fund raising recitals by Janet Hammock and Robert Lapp with proceeds designated for the creation of scholarships for students in the Festival’s piano division. The biennial Dorothy Carlisle Memorial Music Enrichment Program is another important initiative sponsored by the Department of Music. The program provides grade 3 and 4 elementary school children who have participated in solo classes at the Sackville Music Festival with the opportunity to attend free music enrichment classes given by Bachelor of Music students at Mount Allison. This outstanding program for young musicians, made possible by the generosity of Joan Carlisle Irving in memory of her mother, was previously offered in 2002 and 2004, and will take place again this coming fall. —30— For further information please contact Margaret Ann Craig, Sackville Music Festival Committee, tel: (506) 536-0295 (mcraig@mta.ca).
