PEACE — Esthetics of an Ethic

MONTREAL/April 20, 2006 —

A multidisciplinary and international conference dedicated to the major issues of our society

What is peace? Is it intrinsically related to the idea of war, or at least to the absence of conflict? What exactly does peace mean to you, your parents, or your neighbors, as opposed to someone from Tehran or Kigali? Is it seen in the same way in the United States, China or Africa?

These are some of the questions that will be addressed during an international, multidisciplinary conference called Peace- Aesthetics of an Ethic that will take place this coming April 27-28, 2006 in room H-767 of the Henry H. Hall Building (1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W.)

Organised by Concordia University’s Department of Études Françaises, in partnership with the Royal Military College of Canada, and York University, this bilingual event is open to the public. More than thirty international experts (from Canada, the United States, France and Belgium) in literature, law, history, political science and psychology, will investigate the theme of peace; seen not only in its sociopolitical framework, but also with a philosophical and aesthetic bent.

Some of the discussion topics include:

  • Toute puissance et impuissance des images de la paix : comment représenter la paix pour mieux la défendre

  • L’esthétique de l’islam ou la paix malgré lui

  • La représentation de la paix dans le projet impérial des États-Unis

  • Quelle esthétique pour l’après Rwanda?

  • Beautiful Peace: Practical Foundations for a Palestinian-Israeli Peace

  • Shifting to Peace: Revenge and Forgiveness in Aeschylus and Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill
