FACULTY, STAFF RECOGNIZED AT UNBF CEREMONY

April 21, 2006
UNB Fredericton News Release: D635
Sandra Howland, Public Relations Officer, (506) 458-7968

Eugene Lewis and Susan Montague are the 2006 recipients of President’s Medals at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

They were honoured along with five of their colleagues at the sixth annual UNB Fredericton Awards Ceremony. Held at the Wu Conference Centre, the ceremony was presided over by President John McLaughlin.

Established in 2001, the President’s Medal honours outstanding teaching, research or service over the span of a career.

Since joining UNBF in 1969, Eugene Lewis has had a tremendous impact on the department of electrical and computer engineering. He has served as department chair for the past 22 years, and provided leadership through two large department expansions and the implementation of new programs in computer and software engineering. An innovative researcher, Dr. Lewis was instrumental in establishing CADMI Microelectronics Inc. and has served as its director since 1988. His commitment to student learning led him to develop the ‘lab in a box’ program which is delivered in 600 high schools each year.

Throughout her 25-year career at UNBF, Susan Montague has played a key role in the advancement of the university — first as director of public relations and, since 1987, as director of development. Manager of both The Venture Campaign and Forging Our Futures, she has been instrumental in securing more than $150 million in charitable contributions for UNB. Ms. Montague has been a trusted adviser to four presidents and was seconded from her directorship in 1998-99 to provide direction and leadership to UNB’s Renewal Process. She has been widely recognized for outstanding university, professional and volunteer service.

The UNB Distinguished Service Awards honour outstanding service, both at UNB and in the community, that is related to university functions.

The Fredericton recipients of UNB Distinguished Service Awards for 2006 are Jackie Butler, classroom support specialist with Media Services; Doug Crockett, retired HR consultant (benefits and pensions); Robin Dickson, director of admissions in the faculty of law; Gillian Thompson, retired professor of history; and John Webster, retired director of the ITS Web Development Team.
