Dean Celebrates Schulich Oil & Gas Engineering Program

Today, as part of the Engineering Associates (EAP) Breakfast Series, Dean S.C. Wirasinghe recognized the Oil & Gas Program as one of the major flagship programs of the Schulich School of Engineering. This is the third in a series of five such events that will also recognize Women in Engineering and others. The Engineering Internship and Research Chairs Programs have already been recognized.

"This is a chance to celebrate some of the School’s major accomplishments under my Deanship", said Dean S.C. Wirasinghe of the celebration series. The Dean will also be awarding ‘Champions of the Schulich School of Engineering Awards’ as part of this series.

"These awards are given to people who played a unique role in these programs and without whom they could not have been realized."

Establish in 1998 with strong support from local industry, the Oil & Gas (O&G) program has gained international respect in its short tenure. There are currently 126 O&G graduates working in Calgary’s downtown oil & gas industry. Additionally, the Petroleum Engineering graduate program is boasted as the largest in the world.

"The Oil & Gas program is strong and contributes greatly to the Alberta economy," said Dr. Tom Harding, Head of the School’s Chemical & Petroleum Department. "The demand for our graduates and our program is extreme."

The program only continues to grow. With recent access funding the Oil & Gas program is set for a three-fold increase in students from 16 to 46. Additionally, the funding will allow for the hiring of 3 administrative support staff, 3 technicians, 10 assistant professors, and 6 associate professors over the next 4 years.
