Scotiabank donates $450,000 in support of Mount Allison's Meighen Centre for Learning Assistance and Research

SACKVILLE, NB — Scotiabank has invested $450,000 in Mount Allison University’s Meighen Centre for Learning Assistance and Research, a resource centre offering specialized services to students with learning disabilities.

"Scotiabank has always had a strong commitment to education, which is why we are pleased to support the Mount Allison University’s Meighen Centre for Learning Assistance and Research campaign," said John Oliver, Senior Vice President, Atlantic Region, Scotiabank. "We believe in funding programs that add value — that are aimed at fulfilling real needs, developing real skills and delivering real benefits to students and the broader community."

"Through the Meighen Centre, Mount Allison University has been providing specialized services to students with learning disabilities since 1988," says Dr. Ken Ozmon, President of Mount Allison University. "I would like express my sincerest thanks to Scotiabank for putting their support behind such an important project and enabling us to continue to provide these services to upwards of 50 students annually and information on learning disabilities to members of the wider community. Your gift will enable us to build on our pioneering role in this important area."

The Meighen Centre for Learning Assistance and Research is a hallmark institution of Mount Allison and an essential component of the University’s student-centred approach to undergraduate education. The Centre has gained wide acclaim in both regional and national educational settings for its work with students who have learning disabilities.

The Centre’s mission has three main components. First it seeks to provide services to students with learning disabilities to help them reach their full potential — academically, socially, and vocationally. Second, it strives to extend its services to professionals, parents, and students outside the Mount Allison community to help them better understand learning disabilities. Finally, the centre aims to carry out a research program in the field of learning disabilities, particularly those affecting young adults.

The Centre’s services include providing test and exam accommodations, academic counselling, learning strategies assistance, individual counselling, learning disability assessments, a self-help resource centre, and professional training both on and off campus. Starting with eight students its first year of operation, the Meighen Centre now provides assistance to 50 students. As well, a Peer Tutoring program is now in place, which hires and trains upwards of 35 peer tutors a year.
