Campus construction update - Alvin Woods and Alumni Field

As Laurier continues to grow and expand, two major reconstruction jobs will be begin next week on Willison Field and the Doctor Alvin Woods Building (DAWB). Since Laurier’s campus will be seeing a lot of construction this summer, pedestrians are reminded to use extreme caution when walking near or around the construction zones.

Willison Field

Willison field is being transformed and updated into a multi-purpose sport field that will provide additional space for Laurier’s varsity teams to practice and intramurals to take place. The field will be enlarged and surrounded by grassy berms and seating areas. By laying down all-weather turf and planting trees and installing fences the landscaping will be much improved and aesthetically enhanced as well.

Starting May 1, Willison field and the surrounding parking lots will be closed and fenced off to identity the area as a construction zone. Pedestrian access to the Science Research Centre and the Athletic Complex will still be available. The tennis courts and pavement will be removed and later in the week they will begin excavating the earth.

Temporary parking for the uprooted Gold parking lots 3 and 24 will be available May 1 to September 1 at the Greek Cypriot Community Center and New Apostolic Church parking lots on Lodge Street.

Since the new Willison Field will extend into the current parking lots, when the construction is finished the parking that is currently along King Street will be relocated toward the centre of the campus. Only a few spaces are expected to be lost.

The reconstruction of Willison field is being planned for completion for September 2006.

Doctor Alvin Woods Building

The DAWB is undergoing a facelift – the structure is being gutted and renovated for improved classroom spaces and offices. The current residents of the DAWB are moving out next week into Leupold and Euler residences, 195 and 205 Regina St. and into the John Aird Centre after the Faculty of Social Work moves into their new location in St. Jeromes downtown Kitchener.

The Bricker Academic Building is also being renovated into additional, temporary classroom space to accommodate for the lost classroom space in the DAWB, as construction is planned to continue well into the 2006/07 school year.

Beginning May 1, the gold parking lots 13 and 14 will be accessible from Bricker Avenue only. Spaces lost from these lots will move temporarily to the front of the Bricker Academic Building (lot 7) and the meter parking in front of the library will be moved to an outer row of lots 13 and 14.

In addition, the west side of lot 9 at University Stadium will be re-assigned for both Gold and White parking.

There will be very limited pedestrian access around the DAWB. Construction is slated to begin by the end of May.
