April 28, 2006 Source: : http://www.expressnews.ualberta.ca/newsreleases.cfm?id=7517 Donation creates chair to study religious education A teaching and research chair in Catholic religious education has been made possible by a $750,000 donation from Peter and Doris Kule and a variety of other donations. The Peter and Doris Kule Chair in Catholic Religious Education will be situated at St. Joseph's College, the Catholic affiliated college at the University of Alberta. A search for the chairholder will begin this fall with the hope of occupancy July 1, 2007. The person will teach St. Joseph's College courses in Christian religious education that typically enrols approximately 500 bachelor of education students annually. In addition, the chairholder will act as a resource to the Faculty of Education and will assist with teaching graduate courses and supervise graduate students in the area of religious and moral education. The announcement was part of a special service held today on campus to celebrate the college's 80 years of affiliation with the University of Alberta. The college, founded in 1926, offers U of A credit courses in undergraduate ethics, philosophy, Christian theology, science and religion. It is the center for the spiritual, social and academic life of the Catholic community at the University. The Kules have already made major donations to the University of Alberta two years ago to establish the Chair in Ukrainian Ethnography and to the Sheptytsky Institute at St. Paul's University in Ottawa. They are also major donors to the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre at Grant MacEwan College. Peter Kule was born in the Rohatyn area of Western Ukraine and came to Canada just before World War II, eventually establishing a practice as a chartered accountant. Doris Kule was born in Willingdon, Alberta, and enjoyed a long and successful career as a teacher. Both are now retired. For further information please contact File No: 22 Fr.
