This biennial exhibit follows the tradition of hanging art from floor to ceiling on the gallery wall, which began in Paris with the Salon d’Apollon in the mid-seventeenth century. The art on display at the Owens Salon offers audiences the opportunity to see many works from the original collection. This collection was first acquired in the 1880s and includes eighteenth and nineteenth century European paintings, many still found in their original gilded frames, and full-scale plaster copies of classical Greek sculptures. Originally this collection was used to teach Mount Allison Fine Arts students through copying these early pieces. The exhibition is designed and installed by the Owen’s preparator Roxie Ibbitson Opening May 5 at the Owens is an exhibition of recent acquisitions including two large photographs by Edward Burtinsky of Toronto, eight photographs by George Zimbel of Montreal, preliminary drawings by Toronto artist Marla Hlady and works by Calgary artist Mary Scott. These acquisitions were acquired with the assistance of the Friends of the Owens through donations and fund raising, matched with funds from the Canada Council for the Arts. —30— Photo caption: Owens preparator Roxie Ibbitson puts the final touches on the Salon Hanging.
